How to Study the Bible's Original Languages

The Three Biblical Languages
The Bible was originally written in three ancient languages, each with its own unique flavor and purpose.
Biblical Hebrew
The main language of the Old Testament. It is a highly poetic, action-oriented language that paints vivid pictures with words. It is read from right to left.
Aramaic
A sister language to Hebrew. It was the common language of the Middle East during Jesus's time, and the language He likely spoke in everyday life.
Koine Greek
The language of the New Testament. Known as "common" Greek, it was used across the Roman Empire. It is incredibly precise, making it perfect for explaining complex theological truths clearly.
The Anatomy of a Greek Verb
To understand the New Testament, you must understand Greek verbs. Every single time a Greek writer picked a verb, they had to choose a specific combination of three critical building blocks to convey their exact meaning. It wasn't formed later; it was built into the language itself.
- Tense (Aspect): HOW does the action happen? (Is it a quick snapshot, or a continuous video?)
- Voice: WHO is doing the action? (Are you doing it, or is it happening to you?)
- Mood: IS IT REAL? (Is this a solid fact, a possibility, or a command?)
By locking in these three elements, the authors of Scripture embedded massive theological truths into single words!
Building Block #1: Tense (Snapshots vs. Videos)
In English, verbs focus on WHEN something happens (past, present, future). In Greek, the first building block focuses on HOW the action happens.

Looks at the entire action as a single, completed event from the outside. | Romans 6:2 — "We died to sin." (A decisive fact). |

| Perfect The Monument |
An action that was completed in the past, but has permanent, ongoing results today. | John 19:30 — "It is finished." (Paid in full forever!). |
Building Blocks 2 & 3: Voice and Mood
Once a biblical author chose the Tense, they then locked in the Voice (who is acting) and the Mood (is it real, possible, or commanded) to complete the verb's exact meaning.
Block #2: Voice (Who Acts?)
Jewish writers highly respected God's name, so they often used the passive voice to avoid saying "God did it." For example, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted" means God will secretly do the comforting!
Block #3: Mood (Is it Real?)
Root Words: Building Blocks
Many Greek words are built like Lego blocks, combining smaller pieces together to create a new meaning.
Compound Words
Greek loves to stick prefixes (like prepositions) onto root words to intensify them.
- Ekklesia (Church): Made from ek (out of) + kaleo (to call). The church is literally "the called-out ones."
- Sygkleronomoi (Joint-Heirs): Made from syn (together with) + kleronomos (heir). We don't just inherit; we inherit precisely together with Christ!
⚠️ Warning: Context is King!
While looking at word parts is fun, you must be careful not to create a false meaning. A word's true meaning is determined by how the author uses it in the sentence, not just its ancient roots!
Example: In English, a "butterfly" is not a fly made of butter. The same rule applies to Greek words!
Noun Endings (Cases)
In English, word order matters ("The dog bit the man"). In Greek, word endings matter. The ending tells you exactly what the word is doing in the sentence.
The Subject
The person or thing doing the action. (e.g. "God is love.")
The "Of" Case
Shows ownership, origin, or source. (e.g. "The righteousness of God").
The "By / For" Case
Shows the instrument used, or who the action is for. (e.g. "Saved by grace").
The Direct Object
The person or thing directly receiving the action.
Direct Address
Used when directly speaking to someone. (e.g. "O Lord").
Front-Loading for Emphasis
Because endings identify the word's job, Greek authors can put whatever word they want to emphasize at the very beginning of the sentence!
